What are the main Oceania airport hubs?

The Sydney airport in Australia is the busiest airport hub in Oceania and a primary hub for flights with Qantas Airlines. Melbourne, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand are two other main hubs. Many flights throughout the South Pacific will transit through one of these cities first. Nadi, the main airport in Fiji, is also an important airport hub for the South Pacific islands.

If you’re flying through several countries on your way to your final destination, make sure you have the needed transit visas (if any) for the cities you’re flying through.

How to fly from Canada to Oceania

Despite the distance, Canada is pretty well-connected with the South Pacific. You can even fly nonstop to some of Oceania’s main airport hubs from Vancouver! If you’re flying from elsewhere in Canada, you’ll likely have a stop or two on your way to the Southern Hemisphere, but considering how long the flights are, sometimes a break can be nice.

Popular airlines for flights to the South Pacific include Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways and Cathay Pacific, among others.

When is the best time to fly to Oceania?

Since the weather varies widely across the region, there’s not one best time to visit the South Pacific. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that Oceania is primarily located in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed. This makes places like Australia and New Zealand great destinations to visit when you need a break from winter weather. Many South Pacific islands, like Fiji, have warm, tropical weather year-round. The best times to visit are typically in October-November or May, outside of the rainy season.

South Pacific universities and campuses

There are plenty of options for studying abroad in the South Pacific! Melbourne and Sydney are two of the most popular places to study abroad in Oceania, known for their combination of bustling, hip and international city life and adventurous activities. Two universities that are home to lots of international students are the University of Melbourne and the University of Wollongong (near Sydney). Of course, you can always check what programs your school has available as well.

Cities like Wellington and Auckland (in New Zealand) or even off-the-grid places like Suvu, Fiji are also options for studying abroad if you’re looking for something a bit different.

South Pacific lifestyle and culture

Although culture varies throughout the region, you’ll find that many places in the South Pacific have a warm and hospitable culture, with a relaxed lifestyle. In many ways, you’ll probably find it similar to what you’re used to in Canada, but maybe a bit warmer! Down under, people (generally) tend to be more laid-back and use a lot of slang that might be unfamiliar. Also keep in mind that in Australia and New Zealand, you’ll have to drive on the left-hand side of the road (opposite of Canada). Otherwise, be ready to go with the flow and if you’re confused about something, ask a local! Most people are quite friendly.

Exploring Oceania on a student budget

Oceania can be a great place to explore on a student budget! While bigger cities can be more expensive, there’s plenty of free and cheap things to do (including exploring some of the region’s incredible scenery) and you can stay in cheap hostels or airbnbs while saving a lot of money. Larger cities also often offer student discounts for some museums and attractions, so take advantage! Even some of Oceania’s incredible islands can be really doable on a student budget, such as Samoa, Papua New Guinea and even Fiji.
