What are the main India airport hubs?

India is a large country and as such has several international airports.

New Delhi: The biggest and busiest of them all, Indira Gandhi International Airport takes in 70 million passengers every year. It takes about half an hour to get from the airport to the city centre using the Metro.

Mumbai: India’s second busiest airport is called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International, and sees 50 million or so passengers each year. The easiest way to get to the city centre is by taxi, which takes anything from half an hour to two hours, depending on traffic.

Other major airports can be found in Chennai, Calcutta, Kochi and Jaipur.

How to fly from Canada to India

Currently, Air Canada is the only airline offering direct flights from Canada to India, from Toronto to New Delhi. The journey takes around 14 hours.

If you’re happy to make a connection, you’ll have plenty more options, though obviously those flights will have a higher total journey time.

When is the best time to fly to India?

India covers a few different climate systems due to its size, but as a general rule, the best time to visit for good weather is between October and March, when the days tend to be warm, dry and sunny. Aim for November onwards if you want to do some trekking in the Himalyan region. Before then, there’s more of a chance of low-hanging clouds, which is not conducive to epic views.

India always has festivals and events going on, so it’s worth reading up on the major ones so you can plan your trip accordingly. Holi and Diwali are two major festivals worth visiting for!

At the time of writing, there aren’t as many options for Canadian students to study abroad in India as in other places (though it’s definitely possible if your heart’s set on it!). However, there are loads of opportunities to get involved in internships, volunteering placements and other vocationally-minded experiences. Check with your school’s study abroad office to see what options may be open to you!

Indian lifestyle and culture

Indian lifestyle and culture

Indian lifestyle and culture is very different to what you’ll be used to at home in Canada, so it’s a good idea to spend plenty of time researching to prepare yourself. Generally speaking, the urban areas are very loud and busy, and this can be a bit intimidating on your first visit. In time, though, you’ll adapt and even come to love the hustle and bustle of Indian cities! While you’re in India, do enjoy all the amazing food, but do be aware of the all-too-common “Delhi belly” (aka traveller’s stomach issues). Avoid tap water and ice, be careful with fresh fruits and veggies (cook first or wash well with clean water), and eat where the locals eat!

India on a student budget

Exploring India on a student budget

India is one of the best places in the world to travel on a student budget, with prices for things being far less than you’re used to in Canada. It’s pretty easy to get great meals for just a few CA dollars (and you’ll want to eat a LOT with all the amazing Indian food). You’ll find that sightseeing, food, transport and accommodation are all quite a bit cheaper than you might be used to. Have fun!
